Tucked into Spain’s southern coast, near Tarifa, Playa de Bolonia is a small, serene beach that’s ideal for an intimate moment without masses of tourists. It’s an area of incredible natural beauty, with undulating dunes that stretch out into soft white sand leading to the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. Just steps away, you can discover the ruins of Baelo Claudia, a 2,000 year old Roman city – perfect if your intended fiancé appreciates history.

Stroll along the shore to the sound of the gently crashing waves before stopping near the ancient stone arches to ask the most important question of your life. The view is breathtaking, and on a clear day, you can even see Morocco across the Strait of Gibraltar.

Just north of Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe, Praia da Ursa is a raw, untouched paradise. The beach is accessible by a steep, winding trail, but the effort is well worth it. Dramatic sea stacks rise from the Atlantic, waves crash rhythmically, and the atmosphere is untamed and wildly romantic.

A proposal here is ideal for adventurous couples who love the thrill of discovery paired with the reward of total seclusion. At sunset, the jagged rocks cast mesmerising shadows over the land and sea, creating a magical and unique backdrop as you bend your knee.

Cala Macarelleta, Menorca, Spain

Though Ibiza and Majorca usually steal the spotlight, Menorca’s southern coast hides some of Spain’s most interesting and beautiful beaches. Cala Macarelleta, a small cove framed by pine-covered cliffs, boasts powder-soft white sand and crystalline waters that aren’t dissimilar to those found in the Caribbean.

This secret gem is just a short walk from the larger Cala Macarella, and is perfect for a secluded seaside proposal. Bring a picnic and enjoy the blissful beach in peace and quiet, with the aroma of fresh pines and sea salt setting the tone for your romantic moment.

For couples who love the extraordinary, Stokksnes Beach in Iceland offers a proposal setting like no other. Lying at the base of the Vestrahorn mountains, black sands and frothy blue waves create a moody and intimate setting full of wonder and awe.

In the summertime, you can enjoy the ethereal glow of the midnight sun as the landscape is basked in golden light throughout the early hours. In winter, your special moment may be graced by the Aurora Borealis dancing overhead. There’s also a Viking village that was built as a film set nearby, which is fun to explore before or after your all-important moment. As a place that feels like the edge of the world, Stokksnes Beach is certainly a unique destination for an unforgettable proposal.

Elafonissi is a distinctive, enchanting stretch of coastline where the sand glows pink and the waters shimmer in pastel shades of blue and green. Found on the southwest tip of Crete, this is a dreamy setting that feels tailor-made for proposals and romantic occasions.

The beach is technically a shallow lagoon, and you can walk across to a tiny islet to get away from the crowds. At sunrise or sunset, the kaleidoscope of colours here is surreal, creating a fairytale-esque setting for your big question. Add a picnic, a secret message hidden in a bottle, or a bottle of wine, and you’ll effortlessly have a moment that will be fondly retold forever.

The Perfect Place to Propose

Choosing the right place to propose is no small challenge. It’s far more than the scenery – be sure to consider the importance of the location and the emotion it evokes for you and your partner.

If you’re hoping to plan a destination wedding, you could choose a spot that resembles somewhere you’d like to tie the knot, or perhaps a historical location your loved one has always dreamt of visiting. Whether you’re envisioning a secluded cove, a beach with a dramatic backdrop, or a whimsical corner of the Earth, finding the perfect place to propose is both fun and deeply rewarding.
