Mexico has excellent wines, and some of our favorites are the Sauvignon Blanc, Tempranillo blends and Nebbiolo wines from the various regions. One of the bottles of Sauvignon Blanc we tried was from Puerta del Lobo winery located just on the other side of the Queretaro airport from where we live. It was fresh with no oak, just the way we like it. Looking at their website, Puerta del Lobo offered more than just a few wines. They had a hotel, tasting room and restaurant. This was a place we just had to explore.
The state of Queretaro is one of the main wine growing regions in the Mexico. No, you probably haven’t heard of it because 90% of the Mexican wine exported is from Baja California. The most common grape varieties found in this area are Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and the sparkling varieties.
Driving through La Griega, one of the tiniest towns we have seen so far, we arrived early at the winery. Puerta del Lobo has vineyards covering rolling hills as far as the eye could see, and the view is breathtaking.
The Wine Tasting
Our wine tasting was under a gazebo outside overlooking the vineyards. We tried 3 different wines; the sauvignon blanc, a young syrah, and an aged syrah. The wines were fantastic and so was the food spread. We both liked the sauvignon blanc (naturally, this is the whole reason why we were here) and the aged syrah was my next favorite with notes of chocolate and blueberries.
Puerta del Lobo has a few different wine tasting programs such as the Syrah Experience. The tasting consists of a Syrah rose, young red, and aged red.
More to See at the Winery
Our tasting host showed us around the grounds after the tasting. Because we were visiting during the week, we could peek into the hotel rooms and lounge complete with pool table and wine bar for their guests. The 6-room hotel of Puerto del Lobo is booked most weekends for weddings, family celbrations and public events.
A few months later, we stayed at Puerta del Lobo on a Tuesday night. We had the whole place to ourselves including the attention of the two resident Rhodesian Ridgebacks.
Puerta del Lobo Restaurant
The restaurant at Puerta del Lobo is one of our favorite restaurants in Queretaro. Menu items include rabbit croquettes, duck tostados, seared tuna, pastas and steaks. The views over the vineyards is spectacular, and they even have a bocchi ball court for entertainment. Hummingbirds and butterflies buzzed around all year long. We love coming here for a relaxing gourmet meal, and enjoy the serenity.
The price for the hotel rooms are reasonable and the vineyards are a dream. They have plans to expand their brand into cheese making and offering real estate. Puerta del Lobo also grows cabernet sauvignon, verdejo, merlot and small plots of tempranillo, another one of our favorites.
